Hello, First let me apologize for not posting in Dutch, as I still haven't taken managed to learn your language but will do so (promise! ). I hope you can help me as I feel lost and need help. I am a Canadian and am 11 weeks pregnant. We are moving to Netherlands (either Leiden or Old South Amsterdam). I have a 4 years old son. With my first child, I had horrible birth experience. I was in labor for 2 days and then had to do an emergency c-section as my child was dying. They pulled him out last minute and he survived. After him, I tried for 3 years to become pregnant. I had 4 miscarriages during this time. Finally, we did 3 IVFs and the final IVF worked and we are pregnant. It took us 3 painful years to get pregnant again and we have spent a lot of money on this pregnancy. I have antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, which is an immunologic blood coagulation problem and do daily heparin injections to not miscarry my child. I am very worried about moving to another country in the middle of my pregnancy, specially that I need to be seen by a high risk medical doctor that specializes in miscarriages. We are moving around Christmas time and I will be 16 weeks by then (hopefully - if I don't miscarry). Can someone please tell me (you can respond in Dutch if you want and I can use google translate to read your messages) how to find high risk pregnancy units in Leiden or Old South Amsterdam? Is it possible to get an elective c-section (keizersnede) in Leiden based on my previous birth experience? I am very nervous that the Drs in Netherlands don't give me the option to choose C-section and make me go through the nightmare my first birth was. I am not worried about my pain. I am worried to lose my child again, as my first child almost died in the birth process (my cervix wouldn't dilate enough) and they had to push him in again and do an emergency c-section. Obviously, I do understand all the risks associated with c-section as I have done one before. Thank you in advance for your help!
Wow, you have been through a lot! The LUMC (academic hospital in Leiden) is a well recommended hospital, the prenatal expert hospital in the Netherlands. In Amsterdam, the academic hospital is the AMC. I cannot answer your questions about the c-section, you need to talk to the doctors about this. I wish you all the best and hope you have a happy pregnancy and that you will settle well in the Netherlands!
With your history the doctors here will monitor you and your child very closely. And maybe, due to your condition, they won't even take the chance and give you a c- section. As said, the LUMC and AMC are very good hospitals with great doctors. Congratulions on your pregnancy and welcome to the Netherlands
Wow, welcome and what a story! You've been through a lot indeed. I'm not sure about all your questions but I would think it's possible to get a planned C-section but no doctors here so obviously we cannot guarantee that... My friend had her first child with a C-section (it was not an emergency but he just wouldn't come out) and now she's pregnant again. The docotor told her that if she wanted they could do the C-section again but they prefer that you "try yourself first". However; my friend is terrified and afraid the scar will rip or something like that, so the doctor told her that if she really wants to she can have the C-section. The date is now planned as well. (with 39 weeks) I think it's always an option to choose a C-section if you already had one previously but I'm not a 100% sure because I did not have one. Maybe some other ladies who had a C-section can confirm this? And indeed....with your history they will certainly not take any chances!! Try to enjoy and congratulations!
My Englisch writhing issnt that well, sorry about that.i hope you can read it. Bicouse your medicall history youre pragnancy will bee guidanced by a gynaecologist.and iff youre getting a c-section ore a natrual birth willen bee disited by youre docters.one other thing you have the tink aboud is kraamzorg,This person will guide you at home when your back from the hospital.she helps with the care for the baby and looks after yours and the baby's health the first week after the birth.everyone who life's in the Netherlands haves a right to this care, and most off its costs are paid by the healthinsuarants.i hope youre going to have a good pragnancy and enjoy beeing in the Netherlands!
About which hospital that suits with your case, i don't know. A few friends of mine had their first baby with emergency c-section. And all of them may choose by the next pregnancy whether they want c-section or not. I think with your case they will really consider to give you the option to choose.
Thank you elizabethbas, I will contact LUMC and AMC via email and ask my doctors here to refer me to both and send my medical files. Sasjuh, Kitty07, Lieke1989, milika15, and mamajanneke, thank you for all your nice words. I have been really worried about this move and cant sleep. Your suggestions help me to feel a bit better and I am very thankful for that!
I'm afraid I can't help you with any advice as I've never lived in either Leiden or Amsterdam, and moved out of the Netherlands a few months ago, so I don't have any experience with research and appointments that are important during pregnancy. I just wanted to wish you the best of luck and hope you have a much better experience this time!
Hi Canadian! Wow, that's a lot to go through. I understand you're nervous about such a move! When would you be going? I am Dutch and made the journey the other way, had my son in the Netherlands, then moved to Canada and am now pregnant with our second in Canada. I am not high risk myself, so cannot help with that aspect, but have some experience in both systems now so I know a bit about the differences and similarities (also because I brought my Canadian husband to the Netherlands, so am aware of some of the things a Canadian immigrant to the Netherlands encounters when dealing with the health care system). The hospitals have already been mentioned (LUMC and AMC are indeed excellent hospitals), but if you feel you need any other advice etc. please feel free to send me a personal message (click on my name and then on 'stuur een privebericht naar mcm78'). I hope all goes well with your big move and the pregnancy, and let me know if I can be of any help!!
I think the best you can do is contact them by phone. This way you can ask them everything you need to know and explain them you're situation. I wish you a good trip, congratulations on the pregnancy. And not to forget welcome to the Netherlands
Hello Canadian, I think, that if you bring your medical history to the hospital they won't take a change on you losing this baby. You said you were not dilated enough and the baby almost died. I don't know how large this risk is for a second pregnancy, I assume they will monitor you very closely in hospital to prevent this from happening again. Good luck moving here and all the best with your pregnancy!
I know how you feel about moving to another country when you are pregnant. And you must feel probably even worse with a high risk pregnancy. I'll be moving to Saudi Arabia in about three weeks and I am scared as hell and my pregnancy is not even high risk. That said, I wish you all the luck with moving and with your pregnancy and I hope everything will be alright and you will get a happy and healthy baby.
I do not have any tips, but I do want to wish you the best of luck! I pray for a happy healthy baby! If you have any questions you can always find us here op ZP!
Dear Canadian, First, congratulations with your pregnancy! Totally understandable that you are worried. Being pregnant can be stressfull, moving is stressfull, ad up a new country and the picture is complete . There are excellent docters in the Netherlands and you should seek contact as soon as you are here. We have high risk pregnancy docters. For instance in Utrecht they have a depertmant specialized with pregenacies and all kinds of blood diseases. Youre birth sounds like mine. The baby did not fit through my pelvis (I think pelvis is the word, not sure) so I had an emergency C-section. They also had to push the baby back because he was completely stuck, it was horrible. The first thing they told me afterwards was that I would never ever have to try to deliver a second child naturally anymore. I think it will be the same for you. Do make sure that you bring all your medical files, history etc. Docters in the Netherlands do tend to be a bit stubborn so you need to show them "proof" of what happened. When you do this I thiknk you will not have any problems and they will take good care of you. Good luck with the moving bussines and try not to worry (easier said than done, but still...). I hope everything works out and that you will have a smooth pregnancy and a healthy baby.
